Indications
Carafate is a medication used for treating ulcers in the digestive system. Its mechanism of action is by adhering to the lining of the stomach and protecting ulcer sites from the effects of acids, enzymes, and bile salts. t Carafate is not highly absorbed into the body through the digestive tract.
This medication is indicated for the treatment of an active duodenal ulcer. While it can effectively heal an active ulcer, this medication is not designed to prevent the occurrence of future ulcers. Take the medication as prescribed and follow up with a healthcare provider to monitor any signs of recurrent ulceration.
Uses and Dosage
This medication should be taken orally, usually 2 to 4 times daily, on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before meals or as directed by your doctor.
The dosage of this medication is determined based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Take this medication regularly to achieve the maximum benefit. To help remember, take it at the same time each day.
Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Even if you do not feel ulcer pain, continue taking it. Complete healing of an ulcer may take 4 to 8 weeks.
Some medications may not work as effectively if taken at the same time as sucralfate. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist for help with making a dosing schedule that works with all your medications.
Antacids can be used with this medicine, take them at least 30 minutes before or after taking sucralfate.
If your condition persists or worsens after taking sucralfate for 4 weeks, inform your doctor.
Side Effects
Allergic Reactions
In case of an allergic reaction to Carafate, seek emergency medical help right away. Symptoms include:
- Hives
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Common Side Effects
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Nausea, vomiting, gas, or indigestion
- Itching or rash
- Dizziness or drowsiness
- Sleep problems (insomnia)
- Headache
- Back pain
Caution
Prior to taking sucralfate, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to this medication or any other substances. The product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction or other problems. Discuss with your pharmacist for further details.
Inform your healthcare provider of your medical history before using this medication, especially if you have kidney problems, swallowing difficulties (such as difficulty swallowing or a history of aspiration), stomach or intestinal issues (such as delayed gastric emptying), tube feeding, or the use of a breathing tube (tracheotomy).
The use of sucralfate along with other products that contain aluminum (such as antacids) may cause older adults to be at higher risk for developing high levels of aluminum.
If you are pregnant, inform your doctor before using sucralfate. Uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
