Meclizine is an antihistamine medication that is commonly prescribed to prevent and alleviate symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. It can be administered to alleviate vertigo, dizziness, and balance impairment due to inner ear disorders.  

Meclizine works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical that plays a key role in triggering the body’s response to motion sickness and inner ear problems. Physicians may recommend Meclizine to patients seeking relief from these distressing symptoms, and the medication is generally well-tolerated with few reported side effects. 

Uses and Dosage

Before using Meclizine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have a history of asthma, emphysema, glaucoma, heart issues, high blood pressure, seizures, stomach/intestinal problems, overactive thyroid, difficulties with urination, liver or kidney problems. 

This medication may cause drowsiness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can further enhance this effect. As such, refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in any activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages. If you are scheduled for surgery, kindly inform your doctor or dentist about all the medications you are using, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal products. 

Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of Meclizine, which may cause excitement instead of drowsiness in young children. 

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of Meclizine, including drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty with urination. Drowsiness and confusion may increase the risk of falls.
