Description
IndicationsÂ
Besivance is an ophthalmic medication prescribed to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible isolates of bacteria.Â
Belonging to the class of quinolone antibiotics, Besivance works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, to treat only bacterial eye infections. Other types of eye infections, such as those caused by viruses, fungi, and mycobacteria, are not responsive to this medication.Â
Avoid unnecessary or improper use of Besivance or any antibiotic, as this can decrease their efficacy.Â
Uses and DosageÂ
Before using Besivance and with each prescription refill, thoroughly review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Seek the guidance of your physician or pharmacist for any questions or clarifications.Â
During the use of Besivance or when exhibiting any signs or symptoms of an eye infection, do not wear contact lenses. Sterilize contact lenses as per the manufacturer’s instructions and consult with your doctor before resuming their use.Â
The usual dosage for Besivance involves instilling one drop into the affected eye(s) three times a day, with 4 to 12-hour intervals, for 7 days. For optimal results, use this medication regularly around the same times each day to aid in remembering.Â
To properly use Besivance, follow these steps:Â
- Begin by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water.Â
- Check the dropper tip for any cracks or chips, and ensure it stays clean by not touching it or letting it touch any surfaces.Â
- Shake the bottle once by turning it upside down before each use.Â
- Tilt your head back, then use your index finger to pull down the lower lid of your eye and create a pocket.Â
- Hold the dropper as close to your eye as possible without touching it, then brace the remaining fingers against your face.Â
- Gently squeeze the dropper while looking up and allow a single drop to fall into the pocket created by the lower eyelid. Remove your finger from the lid.Â
- Keep your eye closed for 2 to 3 minutes while tipping your head down as if you were looking at the floor. Do not blink or squeeze your eyelids.Â
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct by placing a finger on it.Â
- Use a tissue to wipe away any excess liquid from your face.Â
- If multiple drops are required in the same eye, wait for at least 5 minutes before applying the next drop.Â
- Replace and tighten the dropper bottle cap, without wiping or rinsing the dropper tip.Â
- Finally, wash your hands again to remove any medication residue.Â
Use Besivance for the entire duration prescribed, even if symptoms improve within a few days. Prematurely stopping this eye medication may permit bacteria to persist and lead to a recurrence of the infection.Â
Inform your physician if your symptoms do not improve after a few days or if you experience new or deteriorating eye symptoms, such as discharge, swelling, redness, or pain.Â
