Description
Indications
Bentyl, known as dicyclomine, is an antispasmodic medication that is utilized for the treatment of intestinal spasms and cramping in individuals who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional bowel disorders.
This medication is available in various forms such as tablets, capsules, syrups, or injections and can be administered to both adults and children.
Uses and Dosage
The medication should be taken orally as directed by the doctor, with or without food, usually four times a day. To minimize the risk of side effects, the doctor may recommend starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it. Follow the doctor’s instructions carefully.
Dicyclomine’s absorption is reduced by antacids. Therefore, do not take this medication at the same time as antacids. If you are taking an antacid, take it after meals and take dicyclomine before meals.
The dosage depends on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or take the drug more frequently without the doctor’s consent. Your condition may not improve any quicker, and the possibility of severe side effects may increase. If your condition persists or worsens, inform your doctor.

Moreover, inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have or had glaucoma (angle-closure type), enlarged prostate, urinary tract blockage, intestinal/stomach problems, thyroid problems, heart problems, high blood pressure, acid reflux, substance use disorder, myasthenia gravis, liver problems, or kidney problems.
This medication may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision, which may be intensified when consuming alcohol or marijuana (cannabis). Therefore, avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Limit alcohol intake and speak to your doctor if you use marijuana (cannabis).
Dicyclomine may reduce sweating, making you more prone to heatstroke. Avoid activities that may cause you to overheat and try to stay cool when the weather is hot. Drink plenty of fluids and dress appropriately. Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience symptoms such as a fever, headache, dizziness, or mental or mood changes.
Older adults may be more sensitive to the medication’s side effects, including confusion, drowsiness, constipation, fast heartbeat, unusual excitement, and urination problems, increasing the risk of falls.
