Aygestin is a synthetic form of progesterone, an essential female hormone that plays a significant role in regulating ovulation and menstruation.
This medication is used for various medical conditions and purposes, such as birth control, the prevention of pregnancy, and the treatment of menstrual disorders, endometriosis, or abnormal vaginal bleeding that results from hormone imbalances.
Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally as directed by your physician. You can take it with or without food to reduce stomach irritation. Adhere to the dosing schedule strictly, and if you have any questions, consult your doctor. The amount of the medication prescribed will be based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
For the treatment of abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by hormone imbalance and stopped menstrual periods, typically, this medication is taken once daily for 5-10 days during the second half of the planned menstrual cycle or as prescribed by your physician. Usually, within 3-7 days after discontinuing the medication, withdrawal bleeding occurs.
Side Effects
Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical help immediately.
Serious Side Effects
Call your doctor right away if you have:
- Sudden vision loss, bulging eyes, or severe headache
- Swelling or rapid weight gain
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Missed menstrual periods
- Pelvic pain, especially on one side
- A breast lump
- A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
- Increased thirst or increased urination
- Liver problems, such as:
- Loss of appetite
- Stomach pain (upper right side)
- Dark urine
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Signs of a blood clot, such as:
- Sudden numbness or weakness
- Problems with vision or speech
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling
- Redness in an arm or leg
Common Side Effects
- Irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting
- Headache
- Breast pain or swelling
- Stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or vomiting
- Hair loss
- Depressed mood or trouble sleeping
- Weight gain
- Vaginal itching or discharge

Caution
Before taking norethindrone, discuss with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies, as this product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause an allergic reaction or other problems.
Before using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist of your medical history, including any history of vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, bleeding in the brain, missed abortion, family history of breast lumps/cancer or blood clots, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, endometrial or breast cancer, blood clots, lupus, seizures, migraine headaches, asthma, liver disease, kidney problems, high blood levels of cholesterol/fats, depression, diabetes, or strokes.
This drug may cause dizziness, and combining it with alcohol or marijuana can increase dizziness. Therefore, avoid driving or operating machinery until you can do so safely.
If you are scheduled to have surgery or will be confined to a chair/bed for an extended period, notify your doctor beforehand, as you may need to stop the medication or take extra precautions to reduce the risk of blood clots.
Avoid smoking while taking this medication, as it further increases the risk of strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attacks.
Norethindrone may cause blotchy, dark areas on your face and skin (melasma), which can be worsened by exposure to sunlight. Therefore, limit time in the sun, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors.
This medication should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. This drug passes into breast milk, consult with your doctor before breastfeeding.
