Description
Indications
Avodart (dutasteride) is an orally administered medication that is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. Abodart is used to ameliorate symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as frequent urination, urinary urgency, difficulty initiating urination, and a weak urinary stream. Avodart may reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR) and the need for BPH-related surgery.
Avodart is classified as a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor, which functions by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the primary androgen that is responsible for the initial development and enlargement of prostate glands. This medication is available in 0.5 mg soft gelatin capsules.
