Indications 

Augmentin is a prescription antibiotic that contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.  

Amoxicillin, a penicillin-based antibiotic, combats bacterial growth in the body, while clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, helps to prevent the development of bacterial resistance to amoxicillin.  

This medication is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.

Augmentin should be administered orally, and the typical prescription calls for two or three doses per day. The oral medication can be taken on an empty stomach or with a meal, although if digestive discomfort occurs, take it with food.  

The tablet should be swallowed whole and followed by a glass of water. Kindly take Augmentin exactly as directed. A dosing schedule with consistent time intervals between each dose should be established.  

The frequency and dosage of the medication may vary based on individual factors such as age, weight, medical condition, and treatment response. Discontinuing the use of Augmentin, even temporarily, may lead to the proliferation of bacteria or a recurrence of the infection.  

Side Effects 

Allergic Reactions

Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction to Augmentin, such as: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling in the face or throat 
• A severe skin reaction such as: 
• Fever 
• Sore throat 
• Burning eyes 
• Skin pain 
• Red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling 

Severe Side Effects  

Stop using Augmentin and seek medical treatment if you experience a serious drug reaction that affects many parts of your body, including: 

• Skin rash  
• Fever 
• Swollen glands 
• Muscle aches 
• Severe weakness  
• Unusual bruising 
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes 

Urgent Medical Attention: 

• Call your doctor immediately if you experience: 
• Severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody, even months after the last dose 
• Pale or yellowed skin, dark-colored urine, fever, confusion, or weakness 
• Loss of appetite, upper stomach pain 
• Little or no urination 
• Easy bruising or bleeding 

Common Side Effects 

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea 
• Rash, itching 
• Vaginal itching or discharge 
• Diaper rash 

Caution 

Contraindications: 

• Do not use Augmentin if you have severe kidney disease or have had liver problems or jaundice while taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. 
• Do not use Augmentin if you are allergic to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic, including Amoxil, Ceftin, Cefzil, Moxatag, Omnicef, and others. 

Tablet Form: 

• When switching from one tablet form to another (regular or extended-release), use only the new tablet form and strength prescribed by your doctor. 
• Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium may not be as effective or could be harmful if the incorrect tablet form is used. 

Breastfeeding: 

• Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before using this medication if you are breastfeeding. 

Birth Control: 

• Augmentin may make birth control pills less effective. Consult your doctor about using a non-hormonal method of birth control, such as a condom, diaphragm, or spermicide, to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication.
