Indications
Armour Thyroid is an oral medication prescribed for the treatment of hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid, as well as for the prevention and/or treatment of certain types of euthyroid goiters such as multinodular goiter, thyroid nodules, Hashimoto’s disease, and thyroid cancer.
Although the exact mechanism of action of this thyroid product is yet to be fully understood, the medication can enhance the oxygen consumption of tissues in the body, improve the basal metabolic rate, and increase the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Furthermore, the development of the central nervous system (CNS) and the functioning of various organs in the body.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally, once daily on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast, as directed by your physician.
The dosage of this medication is determined based on your medical condition, laboratory test results, and response to the treatment. For children, the dosage is based on their age/weight.
To derive maximum benefits, use this medication regularly. To remember to take the medication at the same time each day, set a reminder or schedule it accordingly.
Do not discontinue the medication without first consulting with your doctor, as thyroid replacement treatment is typically taken for life.
Certain medications (cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam, antacids, sucralfate, simethicone, iron, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, calcium carbonate, orlistat) may decrease the amount of thyroid hormone absorbed by the body. Take these drugs at least 4 hours apart from this medication.
Different brands of thyroid hormone are available, do not to switch brands without consulting with your physician or pharmacist.

Most of the side effects are mild and do not require medical intervention. However, if the adverse reactions persist or worsen over time, consult your doctor or any healthcare provider.
Severe Side Effects
These side effects must be reported:
- Signs of hyperthyroidism:
- Increased sweating
- Tremors
- Headache
- Shortness of breath
- Tiredness
- Diarrhea
- Sensitivity to heat
- Mental or mood changes
- Chest pain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Swelling of the extremities
- Seizures
Caution
Prior to taking thyroid hormone, inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to it, pork products, or have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive constituents that can result in allergic reactions or other issues. For further information, speak with your pharmacist.
Notify your healthcare provider of your medical history, particularly if you have had increased thyroid hormones (thyrotoxicosis), decreased adrenal gland function, heart disease (such as coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat), high blood pressure, or diabetes, before using this medication.
Before undergoing any surgical procedures, inform your physician or dentist of all the medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription drugs, as well as herbal products. The elderly may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly chest pain, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat.
Based on current data, this drug may be utilized during pregnancy. Notify your physician if you are pregnant as your dose may require adjustment. While thyroid hormone does pass into breast milk, this medication is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult with your healthcare provider prior to breast-feeding.
