Description
Indications
Aricept ODT is a prescribed medication intended for managing dementia in individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
As an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, Aricept ODT works by rebalancing neurotransmitters in the brain to enhance memory, awareness, and functional abilities. Although it does not provide a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it can improve these cognitive aspects.
Uses and Dosage
Before taking Aricept ODT and with every prescription refill, thoroughly review the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. Seek guidance from your doctor or pharmacist for any questions or concerns.
The dosage of Aricept ODT may vary per individual based on their medical conditions and treatment response.
To minimize the potential for side effects, such as nausea and diarrhea, your doctor will initiate this medication at a low dose and gradually escalate it over several weeks to months. Adhere strictly to your doctor’s instructions.
Aricept ODT is usually taken once daily in the evening, just before bedtime, without regard to food intake.
This medication is an orally disintegrating tablet and should be placed on the tongue for quick dissolution. Once fully dissolved, it should be consumed with a glass of water.
To maintain tablet integrity, refrain from removing it from its pouch until ready for ingestion. Prior to handling, ensure your hands are thoroughly dried. Gently open the pouch and peel back the foil layer, avoiding any forceful attempts to push the tablet through, as this may result in damage.
To optimize the effectiveness of Aricept ODT, take it regularly at the same time each day and refrain from discontinuing its use unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
In case of a 7-day or longer interruption in taking Aricept ODT, seek medical advice before recommencing, as it may be necessary to initiate treatment with a lower dose.

Cautions
Before starting treatment with Aricept ODT, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to donepezil.
Consult your pharmacist for further information about this medication, as it may contain inactive components that could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other negative responses.
To ensure Aricept ODT is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical background, especially if you have a history of:
- Breathing problems (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Fainting
- Seizures
- Gastrointestinal conditions (e.g., ulcers, bleeding)
- Urinary difficulties (e.g., enlarged prostate)
Some products may interact with Aricept ODT, including aspirin/non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen). To minimize such drug interactions, disclose your complete medication regimen, encompassing prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products, to all healthcare providers involved in your treatment.
Carefully inspect the labels of all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, as many may include pain relievers/fever reducers (NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen), which, when used concurrently with Aricept ODT, can elevate the risk of stomach/intestinal bleeding.
Nonetheless, if your doctor has prescribed low-dose aspirin for specific medical purposes, such as heart attack or stroke prevention (typically 81-162 milligrams daily), it should be continued.
Notify your surgeon or dentist in advance about your Aricept ODT medication if you require surgery or dental treatment. A brief discontinuation of this medicine might be necessary.
Aricept ODT may induce dizziness or drowsiness. Refrain from operating vehicles or machinery or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you are confident in your ability to do so safely.
Aricept ODT intake may lead to QT prolongation, a condition that can rarely result in serious, potentially fatal irregular heartbeats and associated symptoms (e.g., severe dizziness, fainting) requiring immediate medical attention.
Pregnant women should only take Aricept ODT when necessary. Consult your doctor to weigh the risks and benefits of this medicine.
Before breastfeeding, seek guidance from your healthcare provider, as the transfer of donepezil into breast milk is not established.
