Description
Indications
Amitiza is a medication that facilitates bowel movements by augmenting fluid secretion in the intestines.
This medication is indicated for treating chronic constipation, or constipation induced by opioid (narcotic) analgesics. Amitiza may be employed for managing irritable bowel syndrome in females presenting with constipation as the principal symptom.
Uses and Dosage
For patients taking Amitiza, generally administered twice a day. Follow all instructions on the prescription label and carefully read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
Amitiza should be taken with food and water, and the capsule must be swallowed whole without crushing, chewing, breaking, or opening it.
Within one hour of taking Amitiza, patients may experience chest tightness or shortness of breath. Although this side effect usually goes away within three hours, it may occur again with the next dose. Patients are advised to contact their physician if this side effect becomes bothersome.
Patients with severe diarrhea should avoid taking Amitiza and should contact their doctor for further instructions.
