Description
IndicationsÂ
Altace is a prescription medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) either alone or in combination with thiazide diuretics. Â
Altace is also indicated for reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death in high-risk patients aged 55 years or older and for stable patients who show clinical signs of congestive heart failure post-myocardial infarction.Â
As an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, Altace widens arteries and veins by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. It also increases levels of a substance called bradykinin, which helps to further dilate blood vessels. These actions lead to smoother blood flow and improved efficiency in the heart’s blood-pumping function.Â
Uses and DosageÂ
Before taking Altace and with each prescription refill, carefully read its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask your doctor or pharmacist.Â
The dosage of Altace is determined by the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. Doctors usually initiate therapy at a low dose to reduce the risk of side effects and gradually titrate upward.Â
Typically, Altace is taken once or twice a day without regard to food intake. Tablets should be ingested whole.Â
If taking Altace in capsule form, it should also be swallowed whole, but in case of difficulty, the contents can be poured onto a small amount of applesauce or mixed with 4 oz. (120 mL) of water or apple juice. Make sure to consume the entire mixture.Â
For optimal results, take Altace consistently around the same time(s) each day as directed by your physician. Avoid taking more or less than prescribed or using it more frequently than recommended.Â
Do not discontinue Altace without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well.Â

CautionsÂ
Before using Altace, apprise your doctor or pharmacist if you have any known allergies, especially to:Â
- RamiprilÂ
- Other ACE inhibitors, such as benazeprilÂ
- Any medicationsÂ
- Any ingredients present in Altace tablets and capsulesÂ
To ensure Altace is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, specifically regarding any history of:Â
- Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) due to an allergic reactionÂ
- Have undergone blood filtering procedures (like LDL apheresis or dialysis)Â
- Elevated levels of potassium in your bloodÂ
Altace may have potential interactions with various other products, including:Â
- AliskirenÂ
- LithiumÂ
- Medications that can heighten potassium levels in the bloodstream, such as ARBs (e.g., losartan and valsartan)Â
- Certain immunosuppressive/infection risk-increasing drugs like everolimus and sirolimusÂ
- Birth control pills containing drospirenoneÂ
- SacubitrilÂ
- TelmisartanÂ
To prevent such drug interactions, disclose to your physician and pharmacist all your current medications, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal products.Â
Cough-and-cold products, diet aids, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen may contain components that can elevate blood pressure or exacerbate heart failure symptoms. Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of the products mentioned and inquire about safe usage practices.Â
Ensure that all your healthcare providers are aware of your use of Altace, particularly if you are receiving desensitization injections for bee or wasp sting allergy, as concomitant administration with Altace may result in a severe reaction.Â
Altace can cause dizziness, and consuming alcohol may intensify this effect; limiting alcohol intake is recommended. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in any activity that requires vigilance until you can perform it safely.Â
Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can lead to dehydration and heighten your susceptibility to lightheadedness. Contact your physician if you experience prolonged diarrhea or vomiting. Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, consume sufficient fluids to prevent dehydration.Â
Altace should not be used during pregnancy. In case of pregnancy, discontinue the medication and notify your physician immediately, as it may cause harm or fatality to the developing fetus when used during the second or third trimester.Â
The transfer of ramipril into breast milk is uncertain. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for guidance.Â
