Indications 

Prozac DR is a medication used to treat low mood (depression), obsessive-compulsive problems, some eating disorders, and panic attacks. It is a delayed-release formulation, meaning it gradually releases the medication into the body over time. This allows for a sustained therapeutic effect and reduces the need for frequent dosing. It is available in the form of capsules, specifically delayed-release capsules. 

Fluoxetine is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in certain nerve pathways in the brain. Serotonin plays a crucial role in regulating mood, emotions, and mental health. 

By inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, Prozac DR helps to maintain higher levels of serotonin in the brain. This increased serotonin availability improves communication between brain cells and helps to alleviate the symptoms of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, some eating disorders, and panic attacks. 

Use and Dosage 

Fluoxetine comes as Delayed Release Capsule to take by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once a week with or without food. It is typically taken once a week with or without food. Take it at the same time each week to establish a routine. Start taking it 7 days after your last dose of the form of fluoxetine that is taken daily. Take Prozac DR exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dosage or frequency without consulting your doctor. Do not cut, crush, or chew the delayed-release capsules. Swallow them whole with a glass of water. 

Follow your doctor’s instructions on whether to take it with meals or on an empty stomach. Take Prozac DR consistently as prescribed. It may take several weeks for the medication to have a noticeable effect, so be patient and continue taking it as directed.

Serious Side Effects  

• Abnormal bleeding or bruising 
• Agitation, fever, sweating, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, shivering, severe muscle stiffness or twitching, hallucinations, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea 
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing 
• Dizziness or fainting 
• Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat 
• Fever 
• Hives or blisters 
• Itching 
• Joint pain 
• Rash 
• Seizures 
• Shortness of breath 
• Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs 

Cautions 

• Suicidal thoughts or behavior: Antidepressants like Prozac DR may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially in children, teenagers, and young adults. Close monitoring is necessary, especially when starting the medication or adjusting the dosage. 
• Serotonin syndrome: Prozac DR can potentially cause a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome when taken with other medications that increase serotonin levels. Symptoms may include agitation, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, fever, muscle stiffness, and tremors. Inform your doctor of all medications you are taking to avoid this risk. 
• Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Prozac DR, such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these symptoms occur. 
• Bipolar disorder: Prozac DR should be used with caution in individuals with bipolar disorder, as it may trigger a manic episode. 
• Liver and kidney problems: People with liver or kidney problems may require dosage adjustments or closer monitoring while taking Prozac DR. 
• Bleeding disorders: Prozac DR may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in individuals with a history of bleeding disorders or taking medications that affect blood clotting. Inform your doctor if you have any bleeding disorders or are taking blood-thinning medications. 
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Prozac DR should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor. 
• Interactions with other medications: Prozac DR may interact with other medications, including certain antidepressants, anticoagulants, antipsychotics, and medications metabolized by the liver. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
