Indications 

Desiccated thyroid is a medication that contains a combination of hormones typically produced by the thyroid gland to regulate energy and metabolism in the body. This medication is administered when the thyroid gland fails to have enough of the hormone on its own, which leads to hypothyroidism. Desiccated thyroid is used to treat or prevent goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland, and as part of medical testing for thyroid disorders. 

Uses and Dosage 

Follow all directions on your prescription label carefully. Your doctor may occasionally adjust your dose to ensure the best results. Use only what is prescribed, or use it for longer than recommended. 

While using desiccated thyroid, you may need to have frequent blood tests to monitor your thyroid function. Do not stop using the medication unless directed by your doctor, even if you feel well. You may need to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life. 

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of thyroid toxicity such as chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, feeling hot or nervous, or excessive sweatingregular heartbeat, feeling hot or worried, or excessive sweating, contact your doctor immediately. 

Before undergoing any surgical procedures, inform your surgeon that you are taking desiccated thyroid. You may need to discontinue the medication for a short period. 

Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

• Fast heart rate 
• Hair loss 
• Muscle pain 
• Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) 
• Nervousness 
• Tremor 
• Diarrhea 
• Cramps 

Allergic Reactions

Please seek immediate medical attention if you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Cautions 

Desiccated thyroid is generally considered safe since this is a natural hormone. However, some situations may need to be revised. People with a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis should not use desiccated thyroid. Individuals with uncontrolled adrenal gland problems should avoid this medication. 

Pregnant women may need different dosages of desiccated thyroid, so they should inform their doctors if they become pregnant while taking this medication. 

Although small amounts of desiccated thyroid may pass into breast milk, this is not expected to harm nursing babies. However, breastfeeding mothers should inform their doctors before using this medication.
