Indications 

This medication is indicated for treating coughs that stem from respiratory disorders including, but not limited to, the common cold, pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the lung reflex responsible for inducing coughing. Administration of this medication to children under the age of 10 is contraindicated. You are advised to consult with your physician regarding this medication’s potential risks and benefits. 

Uses and Dosage 

To use this medication, take it orally with or without food, typically three times a day, as required or as prescribed by your physician. 

Avoid chewing, sucking, or dissolving this medication in your mouth, as doing so can result in a loss of sensation in your throat and mouth, leading to choking or a severe allergic response. 

After taking this medication, refrain from eating or drinking until the numbness subsides. If the numbness persists or becomes more severe, seek medical attention immediately. Do not exceed 200 milligrams at a time, as taking more than the recommended dose of benzonatate will not improve your cough but may result in severe side effects. 

Contact your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

If these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately. The medication is prescribed because the doctor has determined that its benefits outweigh the risk of side effects. 

Severe Side Effects

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any severe side effects such as: 

• Changes in mood or mental state 
• Loss of feeling in the chest 
• Burning in the eyes 

 Allergic Reactions 

Seek immediate medical help if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: 

• Rash 
• Swelling 
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Fainting

Cautions 

Before using this medication, consider the potential risks and benefits. Inform your doctor of any previous allergic reactions to this or other drugs and any other allergies you may have. 

The drug is unclear whether benzonatate is safe for children under ten or older adults, as appropriate studies have not been conducted to determine its safety and efficacy in these populations. 

If you are breastfeeding, weighing the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication is recommended. There is a lack of adequate studies to determine the risk to the infant when using benzonatate while breastfeeding.
