Systane is an effective treatment option that works by lubricating the eyes and reducing the inflammation associated with dry eyes.
Consult with an eye doctor to determine the most appropriate form and dosage of Systane for your particular case of dry eyes. With regular use, Systane can help relieve the discomfort and improve the quality of life for those who suffer from dry eyes.
Uses and Dosage
Carefully follow all instructions on the product package when using eye ointments, drops, or gels. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.
Be cautious and avoid using a solution that has changed color or appears cloudy, as this may indicate contamination or deterioration. Some eye drops need to be shaken before use, so check the label to see if you should shake your product before using it.
To apply the medication:
- Wash your hands before applying eye medication to avoid contamination.
- To avoid touching the dropper or top of the ointment tube, be careful not to let it touch your eye.
- After each use, be sure to replace the cap tightly.
- Tilt your head back, look up, and pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch for the medication.
- If you are using drops or gels, place the dropper directly over the eye and squeeze out one or two drops as needed.
- For ointments, hold the tube directly over the eye and gently squeeze a small strip (one-fourth of an inch or roughly 6 millimeters) of ointment into the pouch.
- Release the eyelid, close your eye, and slowly roll your eye in all directions to spread the medication.
- Wait at least 5 minutes before applying other medications, such as drops or ointments.
- If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using most types of eye lubricants, and wait until after using the medication to replace them.
- Some eye lubricants (usually those containing polysorbates) can be used while wearing contact lenses, but it’s essential to check the package to see if it’s safe to do so.
