Indications 

Symmetrel Tablet is a medication used to treat Parkinson’s disease and its symptoms, including dyskinesia (sudden uncontrolled movements). It can be taken alone or in combination with other medications like levodopa. In addition to its anti-Parkinson effects, amantadine is also an antiviral drug. It can be used to prevent or treat certain types of influenza infections, either alone or in combination with flu shots. 

Symmetrel contains the active ingredient amantadine hydrochloride, which has both anti-Parkinson and antiviral properties. The medication works by improving muscle control and reducing stiffness, allowing for more normal movements of the body. 

Use and Dosage 

Amantadine is taken orally in tablet form either with or without food, as directed by a doctor, typically once or twice a day. If taking it twice daily, take the second dose several hours before bedtime if experiencing trouble sleeping after taking it.  

Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet unless instructed by your doctor. Amantadine can be taken with or without food. However, taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset in some individuals.  

Take Amantadine at around the same time(s) every day. This helps maintain a consistent level of the medication in your body. Continue taking Amantadine for the full prescribed duration, even if you start feeling better. Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your healthcare provider. 

If you miss a dose of Symmetrel, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

• Lace-like purple pattern on skin

• Uncontrollable tightening of muscles, change from normal walking and falls

Serious Side Effects 

• Anxiety 
• Believing things that are not true 
• Blurred vision 
• Concern 
• Depression 
• Difficulty urinating 
• Dizziness 
• Enthusiasm 
• Fainting 
• Hallucinations 
• Lack of interest 
• Lightheadedness 
• Not trusting others or feeling that others want to hurt you 
• Shortness of breath 
• Suicidal (thinking about harming or killing oneself, or planning or trying to do so) 
• Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs 

Cautions 

• Elderly individuals may be more sensitive to the effects of Symmetrel. Closely monitor their response to the medication and adjust the dosage as needed. 
• If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks and benefits of taking Symmetrel with your healthcare provider. The use of Symmetrel during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be determined based on individual circumstances. 
• Symmetrel may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion. If you experience any of these side effects, avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you. 
• Drinking alcohol or taking sedatives while on Symmetrel may increase the sedative effects and impair your ability to function properly. Avoid or limit the use of alcohol and sedatives while taking this medication. 
• Abruptly stopping Symmetrel can lead to withdrawal symptoms. If you need to discontinue the medication, consult your healthcare provider for guidance on how to gradually reduce the dosage. 
• Symmetrel is primarily eliminated through the kidneys. If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of Symmetrel to avoid potential side effects. 
• Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking, as they may interact with Symmetrel. This includes over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications.
