Indications 

Risperdal is a prescription medication used to treat certain mental/mood disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. It can help you to think clearly and take part in everyday life 

Risperdal contains an active ingredient called Risperidone. Risperidone belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain, specifically dopamine and serotonin, which are involved in regulating mood, behavior, and thinking. 

Use and Dosage 

Risperdal comes in the form of an oral solution to take it by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. Take the solution directly from the measuring device or mix it with a beverage such as water, coffee, orange juice, or low-fat milk, as instructed.  

The recommended dosages of Risperdal oral solution can vary depending on the individual’s condition and specific circumstances. Take the solution regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Keep taking the solution even if you feel well. Do not stop taking the solution without consulting your doctor. 

Before each use, shake the bottle of Risperdal oral solution well. This helps ensure that the medication is evenly mixed. Risperdal oral solution usually comes with a measuring device such as an oral syringe or a dropper. Use a device to measure the correct dose of the medication. 

If you miss a dose of Risperdal Liquid, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

• Increased saliva 
• Late or missed menstrual periods 
• Nausea 
• Restlessness 
• Stomach pain 
• Vomiting 
• Weight gain 

Serious Side Effects  

• Confusion 
• Cough, chills and/or other signs of infection 
• Faintness 
• Falling 
• Fast or irregular pulse 
• Fever 
• Muscle stiffness 
• Painful erection of the penis that lasts for hours 
• Rash; itching; hives; swelling of the face, throat, lips, and eyes; difficulty swallowing or breathing 
• Seizures 
• Slow movements or shuffling walk 
• Sweating 
• Unusual movements of your face or body that you cannot control 

Cautions 

• Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Risperdal Liquid, including rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction. 
• Behavior Problems in Older Adults with Dementia: Risperidone is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of behavior problems in older adults with dementia. Consider alternative treatments or consult with a healthcare provider for appropriate management of these conditions. 
• Drug Interactions: Risperidone may interact with other medications, potentially leading to increased side effects or reduced effectiveness. Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking before starting Risperdal liquid. 
• Elderly Patients: Risperidone has been associated with an increased risk of mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Use caution when prescribing Risperdal liquid to this specific population. 
• Hyperglycemia and Diabetes: Risperidone may lead to elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) and in rare cases, the development or worsening of diabetes. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is recommended, especially in patients with a history of diabetes or risk factors for diabetes. 
• Liver, Kidney, or Heart Problems: Patients with age-related liver, kidney, or heart problems may be more likely to experience side effects or complications when taking Risperdal liquid. Close monitoring and appropriate dosage adjustments may be necessary in these cases. 
• Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): Risperidone, like other antipsychotic medications, has been associated with the rare but potentially life-threatening condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Symptoms may include high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, and changes in blood pressure. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms. 
• Orthostatic Hypotension: Risperidone can cause a drop in blood pressure upon standing up, leading to dizziness or fainting. Take caution when changing positions quickly, especially if you have a history of low blood pressure. 
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The use of Risperdal Liquid during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Weigh the potential risks and benefits, as Risperidone may pass into breast milk and affect the baby. 
• Seizures: Risperidone may lower the seizure threshold, increasing the risk of seizures. If you have a history of seizures or epilepsy, use Risperdal Liquid with caution and discuss the potential risks with your healthcare provider. 
• Tardive Dyskinesia: Risperidone may cause Tardive Dyskinesia, a condition characterized by involuntary movements of the tongue, lips, face, trunk, and extremities. This condition may be irreversible in some cases. If you experience any unusual movements, especially around the face or mouth, inform your healthcare provider.
