This medication is indicated for the prevention of specific types of chest pain (angina) and may aid in enhancing exercise tolerance and decreasing the frequency of angina attacks.
Procardia is classified as a calcium channel blocker, which acts by relaxing blood vessels, enabling blood to flow more easily. To achieve maximum efficacy, this medication must be taken regularly.
This medication is not intended to treat attacks of chest pain when they occur. As per your physician’s instructions, utilize alternative medications (such as sublingual nitroglycerin) to alleviate chest pain attacks. Please seek guidance from your doctor or pharmacist for further information.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication orally, three times a day, with or without food, or as prescribed by your physician. Swallow the medication whole and do not crush, chew, or break the capsule.
The prescribed dose is based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. Your physician may gradually adjust your dose, so follow your doctor’s instructions meticulously.
Unless instructed otherwise by your physician, avoid consuming grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Grapefruit is known to enhance the amount of certain medications in your bloodstream. For additional information, please consult your physician or pharmacist.
To gain maximum benefit from this medication, use it regularly. To assist with remembering, take it at the same time every day.
Notify your doctor if your condition worsens, such as increased chest pain or more frequent occurrences.
Side Effects
Allergic Reactions
- Hives
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling in your face or throat
Severe Side Effects
Signs of severe skin reactions:
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Burning eyes
- Skin pain
- Red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects while taking Procardia:
- Worsening chest pain
- Pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest
- Feeling light-headed or like you might pass out
- Swelling in your hands or lower legs
- Upper stomach pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
Common Side Effects
- Swelling
- Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling)
- Headache, dizziness
- Nausea, heartburn
- Feeling weak or tired
If you experience more severe or frequent episodes of angina when you start taking Procardia or when your dose is changed, contact your doctor.

Prior to having surgery, notify your doctor or dentist of all the products you are using, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal supplements.
This drug may cause dizziness. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) may intensify dizziness. Until you can do it safely, do not operate machinery, drive, or do anything that requires vigilance. Limit alcoholic beverages. If you are using marijuana (cannabis), consult your doctor.
The elderly population may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness, constipation, or swelling in the ankles/feet.
During pregnancy, use this medication only when required. Discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor.
This medication is passed into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
