Description
Indications
Peridex is a germicidal mouthwash that effectively reduces bacteria in the mouth. Commonly prescribed by dentists to treat gingivitis, a gum disease characterized by inflammation, bleeding, and redness of the gums. However, essential to note that Peridex does not treat all forms of gingivitis and should only be used as prescribed by a dental professional. Patients mustn’t share this medication with others, even if they display similar symptoms of gum disease.
Peridex is typically used in conjunction with regular tooth brushing and flossing when treating gingivitis. As an antimicrobial medication, Peridex works by decreasing the number of bacteria in the mouth, which ultimately helps to reduce gum swelling, redness, and bleeding during brushing.
Uses and Dosage
Follow all directions on the prescription label when using Peridex. Refrain from using this medication in larger or smaller amounts or for a more extended period than prescribed.
To treat gingivitis, rinse your mouth with Peridex twice daily, preferably after brushing your teeth. Use the cup that accompanies the medication to measure your dose. After swishing the medicine in your mouth for at least 30 seconds, spit it out. Do not swallow the mouthwash.
Avoid adding water to the oral rinse or using other mouthwashes or water to rinse your mouth after using Peridex. Rinsing your mouth to eliminate the unpleasant taste that Peridex may leave behind is not recommended since it can reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
Continue using Peridex for the entire duration as prescribed, even if your symptoms appear to be improving. Peridex is not intended to treat viral or fungal infections such as cold sores, canker sores, or oral thrush (yeast infection).
Visiting your dentist for preventive tooth and gum care at least every six months is advisable.
Store Peridex at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
Side Effects
Allergic Reactions
Peridex can potentially cause severe and life-threatening allergic reactions, although they are rare. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- Hives
- Severe skin rash
- Difficulty breathing
- Wheezing
- Feeling light-headed
- Cold sweats
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Severe Side Effects
Peridex may cause serious side effects that require prompt medical attention. These include the development of white patches or sores inside the mouth or on the lips, mouth ulcers, or swelling of the salivary glands beneath the jaws.
Caution
The presence or absence of gingival inflammation following treatment with Peridex should not be used as a significant indicator of underlying periodontitis for patients with coexisting gingivitis and periodontitis.
Peridex may cause staining of oral surfaces, including tooth surfaces, restorations, and the dorsum of the tongue. The extent of staining varies among patients and is more pronounced in those with heavier accumulations of unremoved plaque. Staining from using Peridex does not harm the health of the gingivae or other oral tissues. It can be removed from most tooth surfaces by conventional professional prophylactic techniques.
However, discretion should be used when prescribing Peridex to patients with anterior facial restorations with rough surfaces or margins, as stains in these areas may be difficult to remove and may necessitate the replacement of the restorations. Some patients may experience an alteration in taste perception during treatment with Peridex, and rare instances of permanent taste alteration have been reported via post-marketing product surveillance.
