Description
Indications
Lysteda is a prescription medicine indicated for the treatment of cyclic heavy
menstrual bleeding in women of reproductive age.
Categorized as an antifibrinolytic agent, Lysteda exerts its therapeutic effect by impeding the dissolution of blood clots, reducing the duration and intensity of bleeding episodes.
Uses and Dosage
Before taking Lysteda and every time you get a refill, carefully peruse the medication guide and patient information leaflet. Consult with your physician or pharmacist if any questions or concerns arise.
Lysteda’s dosage is based on the patient’s medical condition and response to treatment. The initial dose of this medication should only be taken after the onset of menstruation.
Lysteda is administered orally, with or without food, as instructed by a healthcare provider, usually 2 tablets thrice daily (morning, afternoon, bedtime). The tablets must be swallowed whole, not cut, crushed, or chewed.
Take Lysteda regularly around the same time daily, exactly as directed. It should not be consumed for more than 5 days in a menstrual cycle or exceed 6 tablets within a 24-hour duration.
Lysteda reduces menstrual blood loss, but it does not halt menstruation. If there is no improvement or an exacerbation of bleeding during treatment, contact your doctor immediately.

Cautions
Before starting treatment with Lysteda, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any allergic reactions you may have had, especially to tranexamic acid or any other medicine.
Inactive ingredients in this medication may trigger allergic reactions or cause other issues. Ask for a list of ingredients from your pharmacist for further details.
To ensure that Lysteda is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical history, particularly of:
- Bleeding in the brain (subarachnoid hemorrhage)
- Blood clots (in the legs, lungs, brain, or eye)
- Cardiovascular conditions (such as arrhythmia and valve disorders)
- Blood clotting problems
- Issues with the kidneys (including the presence of blood in the urine)
- Irregular menstrual bleeding of unknown cause
Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all your current and planned medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal products, before taking Lysteda.
Some products that may interact with Lysteda include:
- Anticoagulants such as warfarin and heparin
- Drugs that prevent bleeding, including factor IX complex and anti-inhibitor coagulant concentrates
- Estrogens
- Hormonal birth control like pills, patches, and ring
- Tibolone
- Tretinoin
Carefully read the labels of all your medications, as they may contain NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, which can increase the risk of bleeding. If you are taking low-dose aspirin for medical reasons such as stroke or heart attack prevention, continue taking it as prescribed by your doctor (usually 81-162 milligrams per day).
Lysteda is typically used for menstrual periods and is unlikely to be used during pregnancy. However, it should not be used during pregnancy, for it has not been established in pregnant women, and there is no data available to assess the risk of congenital disabilities, miscarriage, or adverse outcomes for both the mother and fetus.
Consult your doctor before breastfeeding, as tranexamic acid can be excreted into breast milk.
