Drug Description

Indications

Gravol Baby, also known as Gravol Kids or Gravol for children, is a formulation of the medication dimenhydrinate specifically designed for use in children aged 2-12 years old. It is commonly used to relieve symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, particularly those associated with motion sickness.

The active ingredient in Gravol Baby, dimenhydrinate, works by blocking certain receptors in the brain called histamine H1 receptors. This helps to reduce the signals sent to the vomiting center in the brain, thereby alleviating feelings of nausea and the urge to vomit. Gravol is not recommended for use in infants under 2 years old without consulting a healthcare professional.

Use and Dosage

Gravol Baby Suppository is inserted into the rectum and typically pushed in about a half inch for Baby. The suppository should be inserted into the rectum and allowed to dissolve. Do not exceed the recommended dose or use for more than a few days without consulting a healthcare provider.

To use Gravol Baby suppositories, please follow these general instructions:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Take the suppository out of its packaging. Make sure it is at room temperature, as it will be more comfortable for your baby.
  3. Lay your baby on their back or side, with their legs bent towards their chest.
  4. Gently separate your baby’s buttocks to expose the rectum.
  5. Carefully insert the suppository into the rectum, pointed end first. The suppository should be inserted about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) into the rectum.
  6. Hold your baby’s buttocks together for a few minutes to ensure that the suppository stays in place.
  7. Help your baby remain in a comfortable position for a few minutes to allow the suppository to dissolve.

Follow the specific instructions provided with the Gravol Baby suppositories, as they may have additional guidelines or dosage recommendations based on your baby’s age and weight. If you have any doubts or concerns about using Gravol Baby suppositories, consult with a healthcare professional, such as a pediatrician or pharmacist, who can provide personalized guidance and ensure the safe and effective use of the medication for your baby.

Cautions

  • Age restrictions: Gravol Baby is typically recommended for use in children aged 2-12 years old. Do not use it in infants under 2 years old without consulting a healthcare professional.
  • Dosing instructions: Follow the specific dosing instructions provided with Gravol Baby. The appropriate dose may vary based on your child’s age and weight. Using the wrong dose could potentially lead to ineffective relief or unwanted side effects.
  • Allergies and sensitivities: Before using Gravol Baby, check the ingredients to ensure that your child is not allergic or sensitive to any of them. If your child has a known allergy or sensitivity to dimenhydrinate or any other antihistamines, avoid using Gravol Baby and seek alternative options.
  • Potential side effects: Like any medication, Gravol Baby may have potential side effects. Common side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation. If your child experiences any severe or worrying side effects, seek medical attention.
  • Interactions with other medications: Gravol Baby may interact with other medications your child is taking. Inform your healthcare professional about all the medications your child is currently using, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal supplements, to avoid any potential interactions.
  • Medical conditions: If your child has any underlying medical conditions, such as asthma, glaucoma, urinary retention, or certain heart conditions, discuss the use of Gravol Baby with a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance on the safety and appropriateness of using the medication for your child.
  • Sedation and drowsiness: Gravol Baby may cause drowsiness or sedation in some children. Monitor your child closely after administration and avoid activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you know how your child responds to the medication.
  • Central nervous system depression: Gravol Baby can depress the central nervous system, especially when combined with other medications that have a sedative effect. Avoid giving Gravol Baby along with other medications that can cause drowsiness or sedation, unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Overdose risk: Follow the recommended dosage instructions provided with Gravol Baby. Taking more than the recommended dose can increase the risk of side effects and overdose. If you suspect an overdose or if your child accidentally ingests the medication, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Duration of use: Gravol Baby is typically intended for short-term use to relieve symptoms of motion sickness or nausea and vomiting. If your child’s symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and appropriate treatment.
  • Medical history: Inform your healthcare professional about your child’s complete medical history, including any previous or current medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, heart disease, or epilepsy. This information can help determine whether Gravol Baby is safe and suitable for your child.
  • Breastfeeding and pregnancy: Gravol Baby is not recommended for use in breastfeeding mothers or during pregnancy, unless advised by a healthcare professional. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with a healthcare professional before using the medication in these situations.
  • Storage and disposal: Store Gravol Baby suppositories in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Follow the specific instructions for proper disposal of unused or expired medication.
