Indications
Gabitril, classified as an anticonvulsant, is an anti-epileptic medication primarily prescribed for treating partial seizures. Administered with other drugs and is approved for use in adults and children aged 12 years and older. Gabitril may have additional services not mentioned in this medication guide, as determined by your healthcare provider.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally with food, following the instructions provided by your doctor. To minimize the risk of side effects, your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it. You will likely take the medication once daily in the first week of treatment. Subsequently, your doctor may prescribe 2 to 4 doses per day. Adhere to your doctor’s instructions.
Tiagabine is typically used in combination with other anti-seizure medications. Only discontinue your other anti-seizure medication if instructed by your doctor.
The dosage of tiagabine depends on various factors such as your medical condition, response to treatment, and concurrent use of other medications. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.
Side Effects
If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly:

- Thoughts of self-harm
Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience a seizure that does not stop (status epilepticus). Although this is a rare side effect, a serious condition requiring prompt medical attention.
Cautions
Inform your doctor about all other seizure medications you are currently taking, as the appropriate dose of tiagabine (Gabitril) may depend on the combination of drugs used.
Before taking Gabitril, inform your doctor about the following conditions: confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy, history of:
- Seizures that did not stop (status epilepticus)
- Liver disease
- Abnormal brain wave test (EEG)
- Depression, mood disorders, or suicidal thoughts or actions
Some individuals may experience thoughts about suicide while taking seizure medication. Regular doctor visits are essential to monitor your progress, and your family or caregivers should be vigilant for any changes in your mood or symptoms.
If you are pregnant, follow your doctor’s instructions regarding seizure medication use. Do not start or stop taking Gabitril without your doctor’s advice, and promptly inform your doctor if you become pregnant. While Gabitril may carry risks for an unborn baby, experiencing seizures during pregnancy can harm both the mother and the baby. The potential benefits of preventing seizures should be weighed against any possible risks to the baby.
