Indications 

Evoxac (Cevimeline Hcl) is indicated for managing dry mouth symptoms arising from Sjogren’s autoimmune syndrome. Cevimeline pertains to a pharmacological class referred to as cholinergic agonists. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of specific neural pathways, resulting in heightened salivary secretion. This medication facilitates improved speech and swallowing functionality by augmenting saliva production, enhancing overall patient comfort. 

Uses and Dosage 

Cevimeline hydrochloride is prescribed for alleviating dry mouth symptoms in individuals diagnosed with Sjögren’s Syndrome. The recommended dosage of cevimeline hydrochloride capsules is 30 mg, taken thrice daily. It should be noted that the available safety data do not provide adequate support for doses exceeding 30 mg administered three times a day. Furthermore, insufficient evidence suggests any additional therapeutic benefits of cevimeline hydrochloride at doses higher than 30 mg taken three times daily. 

Side Effects 

Common Side Effects

Adverse reactions may manifest while using this medication, such as:  

• Sweating 
• Nausea 
• Runny nose 
• Flushing 
• Frequent urination 
• Dizziness 
• Weakness 
• Diarrhea 
• Blurred vision  

If these effects persist or worsen, promptly inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist. 

Note that this medication may increase tear production, benefiting individuals experiencing dry eyes. If excessive tearing becomes problematic, consult your doctor. 

Severe Side Effects

Inform your doctor immediately in the event of experiencing any severe side effects, including but not limited to:  

• Irregular heartbeat 
• Tremors 
• Fainting 
• Respiratory problems such as:  
  • Increased wheezing 
  • Cough 
  • Phlegm 
• Alterations in mental states, such as:  
  • Confusion 
  • Agitation 
• Severe abdominal/stomach pain 

Cautions 

Before initiating cevimeline, inform your doctor or pharmacist about known allergies, including hypersensitivity to cevimeline or other substances. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that trigger allergic reactions or other complications. For further information, consult your pharmacist. 

Before commencing treatment with this medication, disclose your medical history to your healthcare provider or pharmacist, particularly if you have an account of respiratory conditions such as:  

• Asthma 
• Chronic bronchitis 
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 

Furthermore, certain eye conditions should be communicated, such as:  

• Night blindness 
• Acute iritis 
• Narrow-angle glaucoma  

Any existing heart ailments should to be disclosed, including:  

• Chest pain 
• Heart failure 
• Heart attack 
• Bradycardia (slow heartbeat) 

Also disclose if you or your family have a history of:  

• Low or high blood pressure 
• Liver problems 
• Gallbladder disease (such as gallstones) 
• Kidney stones 
• Mental or mood disorders (such as depression, psychoses, or cognitive impairments like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease) 
• Stomach problems like chronic heartburn or ulcers
