Indications 

Diamicron XR is a prescribed medication for managing type 2 diabetes in adults when diet, exercise, and weight reduction prove insufficient in maintaining optimal blood sugar levels. 

Classified as a sulphonylurea drug, Diamicron XR operates through the stimulation of insulin secretion to effectively manage blood sugar levels. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before taking Diamicron XR and with each prescription refill, thoroughly review the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any questions or need additional information, consult your doctor or pharmacist. 

The dosage of this medication may differ for each person depending on their metabolism, blood and potentially urine sugar levels, other medical conditions, and response to the treatment. 

Typically, Diamicron XR is administered as a single dose during breakfast.  

While the tablet can be halved to achieve the correct dosage, it must be ingested whole with a glass of water and should not be chewed or crushed. 

For optimal results, take his medication exactly as directed, preferably at the same time each day. Refrain from altering the prescribed dose and frequency of intake without talking to your doctor. 

In case of a missed dose of Diamicron XR, simply take the next scheduled dose at its regular time. Avoid doubling the dosage to compensate for a missed one. 

Discuss with your doctor before stopping Diamicron XR, as abrupt cessation may lead to elevated blood sugar levels, heightening the risk of diabetes-related complications. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential side effects of Diamicron XR. Most of these will resolve upon discontinuation of the medication. If any symptoms persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor. 

Common Side Effects 

• Abnormal liver function, potentially resulting in jaundice (yellow skin and eyes) 
• Skin reactions including: 
  • Skin rash, redness, itching, hives 
  • Swelling, potentially affecting the eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, leading to breathing difficulties 
  • Skin rash may progress to widespread blistering or peeling 
• Decreased blood cell counts (e.g., platelets, red and white blood cells), which may manifest as: 
  •  Paleness 
  • Prolonged bleeding 
  • Bruising 
  • Sore throat 
  • Fever 
• Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation 
• Vision problems

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Diamicron XR, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to gliclazide or any of the non-active components contained within this tablet, such as lactose. 

Disclose your medical history with your doctor before taking Diamicron XR to assess its appropriateness for your condition, particularly if you have a history of: 

• Adrenal insufficiency 
• G6PD deficiency 
• Galactosaemia 
• Glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome 
• Hypothyroidism 
• Lactose intolerance 
• Malnutrition 
• Pituitary insufficiency 
• Porphyria 

Diamicron XR should not be taken if you have: 

• Type 1 diabetes 
• Diabetic keto-acidosis 
• Severe kidney or liver disease  
• Or if you are taking antifungal medications 

Inform all your healthcare providers about your comprehensive medication regimen, encompassing prescribed drugs, over-the-counter remedies, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to minimize the risk of drug interaction with Diamicron XR. 

During treatment with Diamicron XR, impairments in concentration or reaction times can occur. Exercise caution when operating a vehicle or machinery. 

Pregnant or nursing individuals should avoid taking Diamicron XR. If you are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, suspecting pregnancy, or planning to conceive while on this medication, notify your doctor for an alternative treatment plan.
