Indications 

Demeclocycline, a member of the tetracycline antibiotic class, treats diverse bacterial infections, including acne-causing strains. By impeding bacterial growth, this medication effectively halts the progression of the illness. Demeclocycline exclusively targets bacterial infections and is ineffective against viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. The judicious use of antibiotics is crucial, as unnecessary utilization may render them ineffective against future infections. 

Uses and Dosage 

Demeclocycline is available in tablet form for oral administration. Typically, taken two to four times per day. To ensure proper ingestion, accompany each dose with a full glass of water. For optimal absorption, recommended to take demeclocycline on an empty stomach at least one hour before or two hours after meals.  

Avoid concurrent intake with food, especially dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese, and ice cream. Adhere to the instructions on your prescription label meticulously, and consult your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any unclear aspects. Take demeclocycline precisely as prescribed, neither exceeding nor reducing the dosage frequency and do not alter the specified amount without medical guidance. 

Side Effects 

Allergic Reaction

Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience signs of an allergic reaction like: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling in the face or throat 
• Severe skin reaction such as: 
  • Burning sensation in the eyes 
  • Skin pain 
  • Spreading red or purple rash with blistering and peeling 
• Fever 
• Sore throat 

Severe Side Effects

Contact your doctor promptly if you have any of the following: 

• Severe stomach pain or watery/bloody diarrhea (even if occurring months after the last dose) 
• New or worsening cough, fever, or difficulty breathing 
• Painful swallowing or vomiting blood (avoid lying down immediately after taking demeclocycline) 
• Kidney problems include swelling, decreased urine output, fatigue, or shortness of breath 
• Increased pressure inside the skull leads to severe headaches, ear ringing, dizziness, nausea, vision problems, or pain behind the eyes 
• Signs of liver or pancreas problems, including loss of appetite, upper stomach pain spreading to the back, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, rapid heart rate, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) 

Common Side Effects 

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite 
• Darkened skin color 
• Swollen tongue or difficulty swallowing 
• Vaginal itching or discharge 

Cautions 

Do not use this medication if you have a known allergy to demeclocycline or similar antibiotics such as doxycycline, minocycline, or tetracycline. 

Inform your doctor about any history of liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or lupus. 

If demeclocycline treats gonorrhea, your doctor may test for syphilis, another sexually transmitted disease. 

Avoid using demeclocycline if you are pregnant. Its use during the second or third trimester may lead to bone growth problems in the unborn baby or permanent tooth discoloration later in life. 

Demeclocycline can diminish the effectiveness of birth control pills. Consult your doctor regarding alternative contraception options such as injections, implants, skin patches, vaginal rings, condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, or contraceptive sponges. 

Demeclocycline can pass into breast milk and affect bone and tooth development in nursing infants. Refrain from breastfeeding while taking demeclocycline. 

Children under eight should only use demeclocycline for infections that cannot be treated with safer antibiotics. Its use in young children can impact growth or result in permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth.
