Indications 

Adalat XL is a prescribed medication for managing hypertension (elevated blood pressure) and regulating angina (chest pain). 

As a calcium-channel blocker, Adalat XL reduces blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, thereby reducing the heart’s workload. On the other hand, it manages chest pain by improving blood and oxygen flow to the heart. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before taking Adalat XL and with every prescription refill, thoroughly review the accompanying medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any inquiries or concerns, seek advice from your healthcare provider or pharmacist. 

The dosage of Adalat XL is individualized based on the patient’s medical condition and response to the treatment.  

Your doctor may initiate treatment with a low dose, gradually adjusting it as needed. Adhere closely to your doctor’s guidance in this regard. 

Typically, Adalat XL is taken once daily, preferably on an empty stomach, either one hour before or two hours after eating.  

Ingest the tablets whole, without crushing, cutting, or chewing, to avoid potential side effects associated with rapid drug release. 

To maximize effectiveness, take Adalat XL consistently and exactly as directed at the same time daily. Seek medical advice before making any changes to the dosage or frequency of usage. 

Consult your doctor before discontinuing this medication, as abrupt discontinuation may exacerbate your condition. Your doctor may recommend gradually reducing the dosage. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Adalat XL. Immediately notify your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling sensation) 
• Headache, dizziness 
• Nausea, heartburn 
• A sensation of weakness or fatigue 

Serious Side Effects 

• Aggravation of chest pain 
• Palpitations or fluttering sensations in the chest 
• Feeling light-headed with a risk of fainting 
• Swelling in the hands or lower extremities 
• Upper abdominal discomfort or jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes) 

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the above-listed severe side effects. 

Seek immediate medical assistance if you exhibit symptoms of a severe skin reaction while taking Adalat XL, such as: 

• Fever 
• Aching throat 
• Stinging eyes 
• Skin discomfort 
• Development of a red or purple rash with blistering and peeling 

Allergic Reactions 

In rare cases, Adalat XL may trigger a serious allergic response. Promptly seek medical attention if you detect any signs of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Difficulty in breathing 
• Hives 
• Face, lips, tongue, or throat swelling

Cautions 

Before starting treatment with Adalat XL, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to nifedipine or to other calcium channel blockers (e.g., felodipine, amlodipine).

To ensure Adalat XL is safe for you, disclose to your doctor your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Cardiac issues (e.g., congestive heart failure, aortic stenosis)

• Renal disorders 
• Porphyria (metabolic ailment) 

Inform all your healthcare providers about any current or recently discontinued medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as vitamins and herbal supplements, to lower the risk of drug interaction with Adalat XL. 

The effectiveness of Adalat XL may be altered by other medications that impact its removal from the body, such as: 

• Apalutamide 
• Enzalutamide 
• Mitotane 
• Quinupristin dalfopristin 
• St. John’s wort 
• Rifamycins (e.g., rifabutin, rifampin) 
• Antiepileptic drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin) 

Certain products contain ingredients that may increase heart rate or blood pressure. Inform your pharmacist about the products you are using and seek guidance on their safe usage, particularly in the case of cough-and-cold medications, diet aids, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen. 

Grapefruit consumption should be avoided while taking Adalat XL to prevent potential adverse effects. 

Adalat XL may cause dizziness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you feel you can do so safely. 

Prior to undergoing surgery, inform the surgeon about your usage of Adalat XL. It may be necessary for you to discontinue the medication at least 36 hours before the surgical procedure. 

The potential impact of Adalat XL on a developing fetus is uncertain. Inform your healthcare provider if you are currently pregnant or intending to conceive. 

Nifedipine can be transferred to breast milk; thus, nursing mothers should refrain from breastfeeding while taking Adalat XL.
