Indications 

Aczone Gel is a topical treatment for acne vulgaris, a common form of acne in teenagers and young adults, caused by overactive sebaceous glands that result in skin blockages and inflammation. 

The mechanism of action of Aczone Gel, a sulfone antibiotic, for treating acne vulgaris is unclear. Nonetheless, it reduces the frequency and intensity of acne pimples and accelerates the healing of existing ones. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before using Aczone Gel, and with each prescription refill, carefully read its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any questions or clarifications, consult your physician or pharmacist without hesitation. 

Aczone Gel is typically applied to the skin twice daily.  

To apply the gel, follow these steps: 

1. Wash your hands before applying Aczone Gel. 
2. Use a mild, soapless cleanser to clean the affected skin and pat it dry gently 
3. Apply a pea-sized amount of gel to create a thin and even layer on the affected areas. Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions. 
4. Gently rub in the gel. 
5. Avoid applying the gel near the eyes and lips. 
6. Wash your hands after applying the gel to prevent accidentally getting it in your eyes. 

Aczone Gel is for topical use only. Avoid applying it inside your mouth, nose, and in or around your groin or vaginal area. 

Take care not to get Aczone Gel in your eyes. In case of contact, flush your eyes with water and seek medical attention if eye irritation occurs. 

Use Aczone Gel regularly around the same time daily, exactly as prescribed. Do not apply it more or less frequently than instructed by your doctor. Overusing this gel will not enhance or hasten the results but may cause skin irritation. 

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential side effects of Aczone Gel. Inform your physician immediately if any of them persist or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Dry or peeling skin 
• Oily skin 
• Redness at the site of application 

 Serious Side Effects 

• Unusual thoughts or behavior 
• Red blood cell disorder with symptoms such as: 
  • Back pain 
  • Pale or yellowed skin 
  • Dark colored urine 
  • Fever 
  • Confusion 
  • Weakness 
• Signs of pancreas problems:  
  • Severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back 
  • Nausea and vomiting 
  • Fast heart rate 
• Indication of a severe skin reaction 
  • Fever 
  • Sore throat 
  • Swelling in your face or tongue 
  • Burning in your eyes 
  • Skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling 

Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the severe symptoms listed above. 

Aczone Gel can lead to methemoglobinemia, a severe condition where the oxygen level in the bloodstream drops dangerously low. If you observe a blue or gray tinge on your lips, fingernails, or mouth, discontinue using this gel and immediately contact your doctor. 

Allergic Reactions 

Aczone Gel rarely causes severe allergic reactions. However, seek prompt medical assistance if you notice the following: 

• Rash 
• Itching or swelling, especially of the throat, tongue, or mouth 
• Severe dizziness 
• Trouble breathing 

The adverse effects of Aczone Gel listed here are not comprehensive. If you experience any other side effects not included above, tell your doctor right away. 

Cautions 

Before using Aczone Gel, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any known allergies, especially to: 

• Dapsone 
• Sulfa-drugs 
• Any medications 
• Any ingredients present in Aczone Gel 

To ensure Aczone Gel is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, specifically regarding any history of: 

• G6PD deficiency  
• Methemoglobinemia (blood disorder) 

Some products may interact with Aczone Gel, including: 

• Orally taken dapsone 
• Drugs used for treating malaria, such as chloroquine 
• Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole 
• Other medications applied to the skin 

To reduce the risk of such drug interactions, inform your healthcare provider about all your current medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. 

Inform your doctor if you use topical products that contain benzoyl peroxide (e.g., Duac, Onexton, or other acne products). Combining benzoyl peroxide products with Aczone Gel may result in temporary yellow or orange discoloration of your skin or facial hair. 

The effects of Aczone Gel on an unborn baby are unknown. If you are pregnant or planning to conceive, inform your doctor. 

Dapsone is excreted in breast milk. Seek advice from your doctor before breastfeeding.
